The recent news out of Japan hasn't been good for fans of front-engine, rear-wheel-drive two-doors. First came word that Subaru and Toyota were postponing the launch of their boxer-powered RWD coupe, then the S2000 is killed off and finally reports suggest that Nissan has cancelled its Silvia successor. Thankfully, all is not lost. InsideLine is reporting that Mazda is hard at work on another version of the RX-7 and development is underway on the next RX-8, supposedly – and predictably – dubbed the RX-9.

According to IL's (traditionally) unnamed sources, Mazda is working on a 16X twin-rotor Wankel (two rotors, each displacing 800cc), boosting displacement of the current 13B by 300cc and putting out upwards of 270 hp in naturally aspirated guise. Mazda's aim for its next generation of rotary engines is to dramatically reduce emissions and boost fuel economy to the tune of 20%.

Mazda will likely use the same engine to motivate the RX-7, but in addition to offering a traditional manual gearbox, Mazda is developing a dual-clutch transmission with a twist: the DCT will allow drivers to set the exact points where the clutch packs engage for maximum performance on the track.

The RX-7's circuit-friendly cred is enhanced by the report that Mazda engineers are struggling to keep the coupe's curb weight in check. An all-new chassis is being developed that will supposedly eliminate around 220 pounds, bringing the RX-7's weight down to approximately 2,640 pounds.

We're keeping our fingers crossed that both the RX-7 and RX-9 will make an appearance during this year's show season, although the way things are going, we don't expect to see either at this year's Tokyo Motor Show.

the 7 has a big cult following...and I feel/suspect that acutal current Rx7 owners would rather buy a new 7 or a 9 rather than a new 8. The 8 is a different car from the 7.. and 7 followers i think would prefer that make something closer to the old 7 than the 8. Hell is they were still producing rx7's now in the same shape and form they would still be stelling.

The 8 was made more for luxury and family sports car then performance. They've have plans for a Mazdaspeed Turbo and a Supercharged RX8 but those plans have been out since 2004 and nothing has been done Sad

They just improved on something better. There was the rx7 gen 1, then they came out with the gen 2 to run against the porsche and then the gen 3. Remember though that the 3rd gen rx7 was suppose to be the new vette, until ford got involved. Ford bought and invested in mazda and continued the rx7 legend. That is why the vette so so resembled the rx7. That is just another way ford pissed the hell out of chevy   ROFL.

That would of probably be the last year of the rotary if chevy came aboard, or maybe the rotary might of went further ahead than what it is today. we'll never know No Clue

What are you talking about, Ford does NOT own Mazda, Ford has less then 40% of the Mazda shares and they share a plant toghether and sometimes use the same parts on certain cars thats it..And even so Ford does not control the Rotary section of Mazda, it's a totally different division.  Whoop Ass

So them just invest in Mazda.

I think the new Rx7 should  not exceed 350hp.. That supposed to decent in a light weight chassis and People already know the potential. Also more room for enthusiasts to modify it.

Let me rephrase this before you blow a fuse. Ford and Mazda has a partnership. Ford Bail out mazda back in the day, and have rights(shares) technology and platforms with each other.... Is that Better, now the china man has some say. Although, as of November, ford has givenup quite a bit of shares(sold out) and mazda bought some shares back form ford.

There are you happy for that history lesson?? Roll Eyes      or did I get it wrong again?  Sneaky

Yeah it would be really unfair, all 4 rotors I know of are pushing over 1000hp and most are over 1500hp but I mean imagine gas money you would have to spend, it worst then a V8 its gonna cost you $1000 from HWT to UWI   ROFL

LOL.. since two rotors are going to be 1600cc now, then 4 rotors is 3200cc which is equivalent to a 6.4 liter V8 engine...  Sick Gas going kill you. If it is to be in the super car category then maybe; but expect a super car price.

It's not rubbish just like every other car it takes year before people discover how to tune them properly.

Top Gear named it one of the best cars they have driven, and it dominates racing in the USA especially dexterity

It was in testing but they will be redoing it because they're coming out with a new 16x rotary engine in 2012. It's still just a concept, no plans for mass production yet at least not before 2014-15
